Immunity
and Exercise – What’s the Connection?
Moderate
exercise, such as walking for 45 minutes five times a week for 15 weeks,
boosts the activity of natural killer cells, which help destroy viruses
and malignancies in the body’s cells.
It may not eliminate colds and flu, but it can reduce the duration
of the symptoms.
On
the other hand, strenuous exercise, such as that of marathon athletes, can
stress the body and reduce the natural killer cells, thereby reducing
immunity.
The
answer for most of us is simple. Moderate
exercise not only helps us reduce our risk of cancer and heart disease,
and makes us feel better by relieving stress and helping with weight
reduction and weight maintenance, it can also help increase our ability to
fight infection. So what are
we waiting for? Let’s get
moving.
