Making Time for Physical Activity

Debbie Van Horn

  • Replace the word “exercise” with the more neutral words “physical activity.”

  • Make it your goal to increase your physical activity.
As with any goal, increase your chances of succeeding by writing it down, saying it our loud, and talking about it with friends and family.

  • Schedule your physical activity by writing it down in your day planner and on your calendar.  Honor your schedule.  Realize that taking time for yourself is not selfish.  It is self-caring.

  • Plan activities your enjoy.  Forget the “no pain, no gain” mentality.  The more enjoyable the activity the more likely you will do it.

  • Plan physical activity into your social life.
Join the company softball team, take walks with friends, put on some lively music and have “sock hops” in the living room with your children.

  • If you planned 30 minutes of activity but find you only have 10 minutes, do the activity for 10 minutes.  Anything is better than nothing.

  • Wear attractive, yet comfortable clothing while you walk, jog, or play.  It will help you to feel positive about the activity and good about yourself.

  • When life’s demands attempt to pull you away from your commitment to increasing your physical activity remind yourself that the best thing you can do for your family and the other people in your life is to take care of yourself!
