ask the expert

separate doors

Humor 101:
In this cartoon the irony is in the way these men are forcing the woman to enter the mosque from a separate entrance.  Forcing one to follow religion is unIslamic and not permitted.  Yet it is practiced in some mosques in the US and some sick minds admire this manner of 'teaching Islam'... the desire to follow the sunnah is taken to the extent that Quranic teachings are overlooked.

Sūrah al Baqarah:  2.256:
"There shall be no coercion in matters of faith"

This behavior also overlooks the teachings that we need to teach in a compassionate and respectful manner and that abusive treatment is forbidden.  The Quran does ask us to encourage what is right and discourage what is wrong... but NOT in a coercive, cruel, harsh or inconsiderate manner.  If these people only start thinking they will see that the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) was that he NEVER forced people to do anything.  So if they want to follow a sunnah regarding other people why not emulate his wisdom, kindness, gentleness?
