What is Online
Therapy?
Online therapy is an alternative source of help when
traditional psychotherapy is not accessible. It is effective in
some situations. Online
therapy is NOT a substitute for traditional psychotherapy.
It is a
helpful and effective way of seeking information, advice and guidance.
It is NOT long-term therapy, nor can it address chronic and
serious problems. For serious issues seek a professional in your
area.
Online therapy has some
limitations... one
major limitation being that it
does not provide the therapist with the non-verbal cues that
are an important part of face-to-face counseling, unless you tell the
therapist what you are feeling he/she has no way of knowing.
It is also limited by your skill at expressing yourself through writing. Time
constraints also make it unfeasible for long-term use. Like traditional
therapy, online therapy can be effective only if you are honest and
serious in addressing your problems.
Remember that all experts on this site are volunteering their time, be considerate
and reasonable in your expectations of them.
All therapists have the right to refuse contact with you if they feel
you are not being upfront and honest with them. If a therapist
makes unreasonable or unethical demands of you, contact us immediately.
