Good Stress
Uzma Mazhar

Stress is not always bad.
Some stress is inevitable and actually beneficial.

Stress helps people attain difficult goals and perform their best.  Some degree of stress enhances performance.  However when stress exceeds a certain limit, it detracts from performance. Total absence of stress would make life very boring.

Everyone's tolerance for stress is different, and each person handles stress differently. It is important to recognize your limits.

The ideal would be for people to adjust the amount of stress so that they receive neither too much nor too little.  ;-)  This, of course, is not always possible.

When one cannot eliminate excessive stress, the best way to manage it is to learn to maintain a balance even during a stressful event.  If people learn to recognize the warning signs of increasing stress before they reach their limit, they can cope intelligently with their stresses before it gets out of hand and creates further problems.

Warning signs of stress varies, for some it may start with a headache or a stomach ache, tension in the neck, shoulders or back, exhaustion, insomnia, digestive problems, irritability, agitation, anxiety, fear and similar symptoms that one often does not pay attention to.  Identify and recognize how stress starts for you.  If you catch it early on and chances are it won't get out of hand.

Meditation, relaxation exercises, taking a nap or a short break, reading a book, talking to a friend, etc. are effective ways of managing stress.  It is always a good idea to try different techniques and use the one that suits you the best.
