| Obsessive-Compulsive
Disorder
Question:
I am 33 yaers old, well-build smart young man. i did my post graduation in social sciences. For the last few years I have some psychiatric problems. initially it started from counting the fixed figures, then I put in hand cleaning complexity.
I tried my best to change these through various excercises. Now I have created another problem in sleeping, eating, walking habits and of negative thinking about religion which striking me very
badly. I also consulted a medical practitioner and he diagnosed the problem as
obssessive-compulsive disorders with mild hypertension and he prescribed me Cap.fluxethine 20mg daily. When I started its dosage it created severe
headach, lazyness, mode changes and libido symptoms.so now for the time being I have stoped the medicine. N.B. I am still unmarried, can my condition will be improved with marrage or I need some special psychological counselling but unfortunatlly in our country I am not sure to find out a competant
counsellar. Thanks Shakirullah
Response:
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is treatable through a combination of medication and psychotherapy. Most medications do have some side-effects, and as the body adjusts to these chemicals the side-effects reduce. Untreated it will get from bad to worse. Marriage is not a treatment for OCD, in some cases it makes it worse, since another person's presence makes the person feel less in control of his environment.
It would be best to work with a psychiatrist (not any doctor) and a psychologist. Treatment is long term. Medication must be taken regularly. Psychotherapy should help you understand why you need these compulsions, usually there is a deep-seated need for control and security.
Most medications will have some side-effect that usually reduce with
regular usage. If you did not notice changes with the medication,
you may need to try a different combination of medicines or a higher dosage. With the correct medication the change is noticeable.
Consult with a psychiatrist before changing or quitting medications.
You didn't mention what country you are writing from, but one way of finding a psychologist is to check with your psychiatrist or
try checking at the medical school or the psychology department for referral.
I hope this helps
