Masturbation, Islamic Rulings, TV

Question:
aoa,

i was reading articles regarding masturbation on ur site. My question is

1. What is exact definition for this.
2. Why there is no significant rulling regarding that matter (being haram or halal), while the Islam is Alhamdolillah a complete religion. May be we r missing something? what do u think. plz explain.

ws,

Wa Aleikum Salam

Allah Ta'ala in His mercy did not give definite rulings about each and every little detail simply because it would have made Islam a very difficult religion to follow.  There is a hadith about this to the effect that Rasul Allah (saw) stopped people from asking questions because he said that if Allah responds to your question it will become a ruling and you would not be able to follow it.

Allah Ta'ala also forbade us from making anything harām or halāl that He did not declare as such... thus not giving anyone the authority to make up rulings about Islam on their own.

This is what happened with the Jews, they questioned Musa (as) so much hoping to avoid doing what he was asking, and Allah Ta'ala kept answering until they had to slaughter the cow... which they did reluctantly.

Allah Ta'ala knows human nature better than we do, he knows human beings rebel, and that is why He said: 'there is no compulsion in religion' and the hadith that we should not make religion difficult, and another one that if you have 2 choices take the easier of the two.

This does not take away from Islam being a complete religion.  We misunderstand the word 'complete' as if it implies having rules about everything.  I think what it means is that it is complete in helping a person evolve and grow in every way.  Islam gives us an overall understanding of how to be and then expects us to use our free-will and wisdom to make the right decision.

Follow up Question

aoa,
thanks for detailed answer.

i am still surprised b/c having ruling regarding any affair, will make followers to follow the religion easy. any ways one question more. I have read a number of debates on this topic... it means the matter is not to be ignored , with ur openoin that the thing is not halal nor haram as well .. dont u think that people specially our young generation could be at wrong side. In fact according to my studies this thing is supposed to be very -ve even in western society too. so how could islam allow that thing.

Plz answer in Islamic Shariyah what is the rulling about veiwing satellite programs ( that people mostly do) is that included in masturbation?

ws,
plz answer.

Wa Aleikum Salam Humera

I believe that there are many things left open to us so that we use our freedom of thought and choice to make decisions about living our life.  Making wrong choices is also a way of learning from our mistakes... so mistakes are not as bad as people generally make them out to be.  God has given us overall guidelines and also given us the intelligence to read between lines... that is a blessing, otherwise human beings would be no more than puppets.  Rigidity ultimately drives people away from God.

Specifically, about masturbation... it is neither halāl nor harām... not black or white thinking, because many things have to be decided with each situation as it occurs... it would be very unhealthy if a person was addicted to it to the extent that it takes over their life, however there may be times when it could save them from a worse sin... eg: masturbation is better than illicit relations.  So many things are left open to our discretion.

Rulings about specifics is based on the overall message of the Quran.  The Quran would have to be endless volumes of work if it included every little detail from the past, present and future.  So the message is to live a clean and wholesome life and don't get caught up in worldly affairs to the extent that it distracts you from God.  Now people can use this overall message to understand how satellite TV fits in their life.  It is possible to view educational, informative and entertaining programs and thus get the benefit of modern technology.  But if one is wasting their entire day just watching nonsense programming, that is not a healthy way to live.  The world is not a bad place as long as we can stay balanced in it.
