Depression and Mood Swings

Question:
As salaamu alaikum.
I am 25 years old and I am severely depressed a lot of the time, overly so to where it affects my life drastically. I need a referral and advice. I have disturbed sleep, violent mood swings, irritability, can\t concentrate, and many more problems. I really need to know what to do, I am a mother and a wife, and I don't like being like this!
Please help me....

Response:
Your condition seems to be serious and long term. Mood swings, depression and irritability are generally indicative of Bipolar Disorder, and medication is very important in this condition.  Please go to a psychiatrist for medication and a counselor in your area for help in managing yourself.  This condition is usually persistent and is not brought on by any triggering event, it is due to a chemical imbalance… kind of like diabetes in which the body does not produce enough insulin for it’s use so patients have to take medication.

You did not mention where you live, but do a search in crescentlife.com directory for health, psychiatrist, psychologist and counselor.  The directory is not exhaustive so if you don’t find a Muslim professional in your area, at least start with someone.  Your insurance company should be able to provide you with a list of professionals that they will cover, and the phone book or local hospital or referral service in your area can be very helpful in locating professionals.  It is always a good idea to check how you relate with them; you need to feel comfortable with the professionals that you will share personal details with… if you don’t then go to another until you find one that you are comfortable with.
