| Anxiety and Fear of Aging
Question:
Please could you advise me on how to overcome anxiety. I am mostly ok during the day, but waken very early, and have those \'butterflies\' in my stomach, and my arms feel so heavy.
I have just been told that I have to take eye drops, probably for ever, and although I have had lots of
reassurance, I am quite upset about it. It sort of smacks of getting older, and
that's scary!
Response:
Psychodynamically, anxiety is fear based. When one has a rigid viewpoint of how life should be and are overwhelmed by it not falling within their limits of what is acceptable... one tends to worry and feel fear. Feeling helpless and the belief that one is incapable of handling life is an associated feature.
Our thoughts are the building block of our life. Thoughts lead to feelings and feelings lead to actions. If you have positive thoughts/beliefs you will have positive feelings and you will make positive choices/actions in your life. The opposite holds true also, negative thoughts lead to negative feelings, which lead to negative actions. Examine your thoughts and beliefs... see if they are holding you back from realizing your potential as a positive and strong being.
Spiritually, it is a lack of trust in the perfection of life's plan as it unfolds. A non-acceptance of lessons as they unfold in one's life for the needed learning they provide for our growth. If we take the attitude that trials in life are designed to help us get in touch with our potential strengths, then they become positive experiences. You might be amazed at your own strength. ;-)
It would be a good idea to pay attention to your dreams, and what your subconscious is trying to tell you during your sleep. Usually, it demands our attention to deal with issues we avoid.
Getting older is scary? ;-) Who made that rule? It can be beautiful as you realize your potential with each passing year. It is all in the attitude we take.
Treatment options available are medication and therapy. Meditation, journaling and affirmations are also helpful.
