| Alcoholism &
Sleep-walking
Question:
I had a question, My husban drink and sleepwalks alot. I had read that
people can sit up in bed, making body movements, urinate and avoid looking
at another person who is attempts to communicate with them. My
question is can drinking have the same effect as sleep walking? When he
drink (alot) and goes to bed he will get up (sleepwalking) he will wonder
around the house, picking or pulling at the blankets and urinate on the
floor, I try to wake him but he avoids looking at me or talking to me. I
have tryed to wake him several ways to tell him what he is doing,
splashing water on him, yelling, pulling him. I have tried everything.
And it is only when he drinks he doesn't do it any other time. Is
there some connections with Alcholism and sleepwalking? Thank you
Kathy
Question:
I\'ve come to relize that my boyfriend sleepwalks. Which seems somewhat normal to me, but what I think is strange is that he urinates where ever he pleases while doing it. The first time he did it in our room on the carpet, and the second time he went out on our porch (were 2nd level screened in) and did it out there.... What is the cause of this, and can anything be done? Also, he uses marajuana and alcohol could this be a cause?

Response:
Hello
Some people who drink heavily and pass out/black-out do report problems with urinating in
bed. Since your husband does not sleep-walk except
when he has been drinking heavily, I would not categorize it as a typical
sleep-walking problem, but an inability to become conscious enough to wake
up and to go to the bathroom. Alcohol
does affects the central nervous system. In his situation the problem is
not sleep-walking, but his heavy drinking.
Sleep-walking is not
necessarily related to alcoholism or drug-usage, but when it does occur in combination it is
more difficult to deal with. Alcohol
can disrupt sleep and will aggravate underlying
sleep disorders. He needs to address his problem with
alcohol first, if after that he is still sleep-walking, then that can be
addressed.
