| Right to Sustenance
Quran
Sūrah Hud 11.6
'And there is no living creature on earth but depends for its sustenance
on God.'
Sūrah al Anam 6.165
'Say: 'Am I to seek a sustainer other than God, when He is the Sustainer
of all things?'
Sūrah al Mulk: 67.15
'He it is who has made the earth easy to live upon: go about, then, in all
its regions, and partake of the sustenance which He provides: but (always
bear in mind that) unto Him you shall resurrected'.
Note: A cardinal
concept in the Qur'an which underlies the socio-economic-political system
of Islam is that the ownership of everything belongs not to any person,
but to God. Since God is the universal creator, every creature has the
right to partake of what belongs to God.
Every human
being has the right to a means of living and that those who hold economic
or political power do not have the right to deprive others of the basic
necessities of life by misappropriating or misusing resources which have
been created by God for the benefit of humanity in general.
Hadith
"When the Prophet (pbuh) came to
Medina, there was no source of potable water except the Ruma well. He said
to his companions, 'who will buy the Ruma well to make it free for the
Muslims and will have one better than this well in heaven?'
Uthman bought it and made it free for all Muslims.
"When you take water out of your pail
to put in your brother's pail, it counts as a benefaction, or
sadaqa".
"When you give someone a drink of
water, it counts as a sadaqa".
