Respect

Qur'ān

Sūrah al Isra' 17.70
"Now, indeed, We have conferred dignity on the children of Adam."

Sūrah al Ahzab 33.72
Human beings are deemed worthy of esteem because of all creation they alone chose to accept the "trust" of freedom of will.

Sūrah al Baqarah 2.30-34
Human beings can exercise freedom of will because they possess the rational faculty, which is what distinguishes them from all other creatures.

Sūrah at Tin 95.4-6
Though human beings can become "the lowest of the lowest," the Qur'an declares that they have been made "in the best of moulds", having the ability to think, to have knowledge of right and wrong, to do the good and to avoid the evil. Thus, on account of the promise which is contained in being human, namely, the potential to be God's vicegerent on earth, the humanness of all human beings is to be respected and considered to be an end in itself.

Sūrah at Tawbah 9.71
"And [as for] the believers, both men and women - they are friends and protectors of one another: they [all] enjoin the doing of what is right and forbid the doing of what is wrong, and are constant in prayer, and render the purifying dues, and pay heed unto God and His apostle. It is they upon whom God will bestow His grace: verily, God is almighty, wise."

Ahadith

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:  Allah's Apostle said. "It is one of the greatest sins that a man should curse his parents." It was asked (by the people), "O Allah's Apostle! How does a man curse his parents?" The Prophet said, "'The man abuses the father of another man and the latter abuses the father of the former and abuses his mother."
