Hypochondriasis

Hypochondriasis involves unfounded fears of having a serious illness.  Usually preoccupied with bodily functions, the patient tends to misinterpret and exaggerate common signs or sensations as serious illnesses.. ie: a common cough is seen as a sure sign of lung cancer.

  • Preoccupation with the idea of having a disease based on misinterpretation of symptoms
  • Preoccupation continues even after a negating medical evaluation
  • Distress
  • Impairment in social, occupational functioning
  • Duration at least 6 months
